FAQs
What should I look for in an editor for my book manuscript?
First, your editor should have the right credentials to work on the kind of manuscript you have written. At Writer Network member agencies, your project will always be assigned to an editor who has an advanced degree in the appropriate writing field and who has worked as an editor in that field for several years. Our editors also have publications of their own in the field within which they work (fiction editors have published novels, non-fiction editors have published non-fiction books, academic editors have published academic articles and/or books, technical editors have written technical material, and etc.). Second, and most importantly, your Writer Network affiliated editor will provide you with a sample edit of your manuscript that accurately reflects the level of edit your project will receive (and never hire an editor without a sample edit of your manuscript!). Last, you will receive a service agreement that outlines the services to be rendered in black and white, which is your editor's guarantee that the work will be performed as sampled and for the price quoted.
How does an edit proceed at Writer Network's member agencies?
Your editor will provide you with a sample edit and a price quote so that you know upfront what the project will cost. When you decide to hire the Writer Network member agency editor, the editor then sends you a service agreement (SA) that spells out the services to be rendered, payment method options (PayPal.com is the preferred method because it is quick and safe, but there are other methods listed in the SA that your editor can discuss with you), and much else in black and white. After the initial fee installment is received, your project is in the editor's schedule.
How long will the edit of my manuscript take?
The specific turnaround for your project depends on a variety of factors: the length of your manuscript, the level of attention and type of service required, the projects ahead of yours in the editor's schedule, and so on. However, the member agencies of Writer Network are committed to turning around all projects efficiently, and consequently, our editors do not schedule more than a few weeks in advance; and because this is a network of freelancers, your project is not only assigned to an editor with the requisite skills and experience for your project but one who can fit your project into his/her schedule sooner rather than later.
